The “anti-stress vitamin” protects the nervous system and supports you during challenging periods!

Vitamin B1, or Thiamine, is a water-soluble vitamin that belongs to the B-complex group. Also called the “anti-stress vitamin,” thiamine helps strengthen the immune system, assisting the body in coping with stress. It plays an important role in supporting energy and metabolism. The daily requirement of Vitamin B1 can be met through both food and supplements. Foods rich in thiamine include brewer’s yeast, vegetables, seeds and nuts, whole grains, yogurt, and more. As long as we have access to a varied diet and supplements, deficiency should not occur; however, there are certain factors that can increase the risk of deficiency.

Factors that may lead to Vitamin B1 deficiency

  • Excessive consumption of alcohol or certain medications.
  • Eating disorders (e.g., anorexia).
  • Bariatric surgery procedures.
  • Digestive issues (diarrhea, Crohn’s disease) or liver problems.
  • Boiling foods or exposure to high temperatures, which can destroy Vitamin B1.
  • An unbalanced diet, high in refined foods and low in vegetables, whole grains, nuts, peanuts, and seeds.

For this reason, it is important to pay attention to our symptoms. Headaches, nausea, abdominal discomfort, loss of appetite, fatigue or irritability, states of confusion, apathy or depression, muscle weakness, blurred vision, memory problems, and irregular heart rhythms are just some of the signs that may indicate a lack of Vitamin B1 in the body.

Vitamin B1 and energy metabolism

Vitamin B1, or thiamine, is involved in the synthesis of ATP, the main molecule that transports energy within cells. Thiamine also plays a role in the breakdown of proteins and fats. After consuming a food or supplement containing Vitamin B1, it is transported through the blood and plasma and utilized by cells to convert it into energy.

Vitamin B1 supports heart health and normal nervous system function

Among the multiple roles of Vitamin B1, studies have confirmed that supplementation has effects on both the heart and the central nervous system. Vitamin B1 appears to aid in the development of the myelin sheath, the protective layer that surrounds nerves and shields them from damage. Some researchers even suggest that Vitamin B1 may have a beneficial impact on neurodegenerative diseases such as Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, and Huntington’s disease. Additionally, another study showed that thiamine not only reduced fatigue in patients who had suffered a stroke, but also improved cardiac function in individuals with heart failure.

Vitamin B1 supports the immune system

Vitamin B1, or thiamine, helps maintain the muscular tone of the walls of the digestive tract, where most immune system cells are located. Thiamine also contributes to the secretion of hydrochloric acid, which is essential for the digestion of food and the absorption of nutrients.

Consequences of Vitamin B1 deficiency

A deficiency in Vitamin B1 can lead to a range of symptoms and conditions, the most well-known being Beriberi (hence thiamine is also called the “anti-beri-beri vitamin”), which affects the peripheral nerves and, if left untreated, can be fatal. Other symptoms include anorexia, delayed growth, slow digestion, complications during pregnancy and breastfeeding, colitis, stress, irritability, anemia, general fatigue and prolonged recovery, atherosclerosis, heart rhythm disorders, neuritis and polyneuritis (hence thiamine is also called the “anti-neuritic vitamin”), cerebral hemorrhages, thrombosis, infectious diseases of the nervous system, heart failure, myocarditis (hence thiamine is also called the “heart vitamin”), and more.
