Monolaurin is a dietary supplement derived from coconut. Also known as glycerol monolaurate, lauricidin, or monolaurin, it is a substance extracted from lauric acid, naturally found in coconut oil and breast milk. Monolaurin exhibits antibacterial, antifungal, and antiviral activity. Studies have shown benefits in supporting gut health, immunity, colds, flu, herpes, as well as Zoster virus, Epstein-Barr virus, cytomegalovirus, and other infections (including parasitic and fungal).
According to a review published in 2006, the antiviral properties of monolaurin have been recognized in literature since 1966. Since then, its ability to destroy viruses has been documented. Its antimicrobial activity is mainly due to the dissolution of lipid layers in the viral envelope or in the cell membranes of pathogenic microorganisms. In this way, monolaurin can destroy viruses and inhibit their replication. Due to these properties, monolaurin may be used as support in colds, flu, herpes, Epstein–Barr virus infections, or cytomegalovirus infections.
Antibiotic resistance continues to create problems worldwide. That is why the search for natural alternatives to antibiotic treatments has been a focus of researchers for a long time. The good news is that monolaurin has antibacterial properties without affecting the intestinal flora, as can happen with conventional antibiotics. Studies have shown that monolaurin is effective against bacteria, including antibiotic-resistant Staphylococcus aureus. (In vitro and in vivo effects of two coconut oils in comparison to monolaurin on Staphylococcus aureus: rodent studies; Vijaya Manohar 1, Bobby Echard, Nicholas Perricone, Cass Ingram, Mary Enig, Debasis Bagchi, Harry G Preuss; Comparative Study J Med Food. 2013 Jun).
A 2016 study demonstrated that monolaurin can be useful for Candida fungal infections, reducing the pro-inflammatory response of the body. (In vitro evaluation of antifungal activity of monolaurin against Candida albicans biofilms; PeerJ. 2016).
Monolaurin is a dietary supplement.
