Coenzyme Q10 is a natural dietary supplement recommended for supporting cardiovascular health, cellular energy production, protection against oxidative stress, reducing fatigue, and supporting healthy aging processes. Coenzyme Q10 has antioxidant properties and supports vitality and metabolic balance. It may also help protect LDL cholesterol from oxidative damage.
Coenzyme Q10 is a fat-soluble compound found in all body cells and involved in cellular energy production (ATP – adenosine triphosphate). For optimal mitochondrial function, the body also relies on nutrients such as L-carnitine, D-ribose, and magnesium. When these nutrients are insufficient, oxidative stress may contribute to inflammatory processes in the body.
Coenzyme Q10 supports cellular growth, maintenance, and normal metabolic function. It is present in cell membranes throughout the body and plays an important role in maintaining healthy cellular metabolism. As an antioxidant, Coenzyme Q10 helps protect cells during the natural aging process and supports the body’s defense against free radicals. It may also contribute to improved utilization of essential nutrients such as vitamins C and E.
Coenzyme Q10 is found in small amounts in a variety of foods, including soybean oil, spinach, broccoli, sardines, tuna, mackerel, salmon, eggs, peanuts, nuts, soy products, and whole grains. Higher concentrations are present in certain animal organs such as heart, liver, and kidneys, as well as in meat. However, the amount obtained from food alone is generally low and may not significantly increase the body’s CoQ10 levels. Most of the required amount is produced naturally by the body, while dietary intake contributes only a small portion.
After the age of 25, the body’s natural production of Coenzyme Q10 may gradually decline, making supplementation a supportive option for maintaining heart, brain, muscle, eye, and kidney function. Some studies have observed lower CoQ10 levels in individuals with certain conditions, such as cardiovascular diseases, cancer, diabetes, or neurodegenerative disorders. However, it has not been clearly established whether low CoQ10 levels contribute to these conditions or occur as a result of them.
Although present throughout the body, Coenzyme Q10 levels vary between tissues. The highest concentrations are found in organs with high metabolic activity, such as the heart, kidneys, and liver, where it plays a key role in cellular energy transfer.
More clinical studies have highlighted the potential benefits of Coenzyme Q10 in supporting cardiovascular health in conditions such as heart failure, angina, cardiomyopathy, and atherosclerosis. Supplementation with Coenzyme Q10 in patients undergoing cardiac surgery may help support heart function and may contribute to reducing the incidence of arrhythmias during recovery. Additionally, research suggests that statin therapy, used to lower LDL cholesterol levels, may reduce the body’s natural synthesis of Coenzyme Q10, which is why supplementation is often considered as supportive nutritional intake.
Premature skin aging is mainly associated with hormonal imbalances, the harmful effects of free radicals, and ultraviolet radiation. These factors may also contribute to the appearance of certain skin irritations or breakouts.
At skin level, Coenzyme Q10 is found in the superficial layer, where it helps protect against ultraviolet radiation. Exposure to UV rays can affect skin cells responsible for maintaining elasticity, accelerating the appearance of wrinkles. In addition to its use as a key ingredient in facial care products, dietary supplements containing Coenzyme Q10, especially after the age of 30, may help support skin health and reduce the visible signs of aging. Some research also suggests that CoQ10 supplementation may contribute to skin protection mechanisms.
Coenzyme Q10 is a dietary supplement.
Food supplements should not replace a varied and balanced diet and a healthy lifestyle. Do not exceed the recommended daily dose. Keep out of reach and sight of young children.
