Taurine supports cardiovascular health

May help support healthy blood pressure levels. The relationship between taurine and blood pressure has been studied since the 1980s. Several studies have investigated its potential benefits, including a 2016 clinical study conducted in China.

The study lasted 12 weeks and included 120 men and women with prehypertension (systolic blood pressure up to 139 mm Hg and diastolic up to 89 mm Hg). Participants were randomly assigned to either a placebo group or a taurine group, with the latter receiving 1.6 g of taurine daily. At the end of the study period, the placebo group showed no significant changes, while the taurine group experienced meaningful reductions in both systolic and diastolic blood pressure.

May support heart function. Research suggests that taurine may help promote relaxation of cardiac muscle tissue. It may also help modulate sympathetic nervous system activity and reduce vascular smooth muscle response to vasoconstrictive agents. In heart muscle cells, taurine plays an important role in maintaining calcium balance and normal metabolism.

In a small double-blind, placebo-controlled study involving 14 participants, taurine supplementation was evaluated in individuals with heart failure. A low dietary intake of taurine may therefore be associated with reduced cholesterol excretion and a potential increase in plasma cholesterol levels.
