Melatonin Forte 10 mg is a dietary supplement providing a therapeutic dose of melatonin – 10 mg per capsule. Melatonin is a hormone produced by the pineal gland in the absence of light, serving as the body’s chemical expression of perceiving darkness. Known as the “sleep hormone” or “hormone of darkness,” melatonin release is inhibited by light. Production of melatonin by the pineal gland promotes quality sleep, shortens the time it takes to fall asleep, and increases total sleep duration. But melatonin does much more than that!
Our brain begins to secrete melatonin in the evening, around 9:00 PM. By increasing melatonin secretion, the body senses that bedtime is approaching. Melatonin secretion depends on how much light the body absorbs — in other words, if we are exposed to light in the evening, the body does not secrete melatonin properly. Watching TV or using the phone before bedtime can cause sleep problems. The light emitted by electronic devices affects melatonin production. Ideally, we should avoid watching TV and using the phone at least one hour before going to bed to stimulate melatonin production and maintain the circadian rhythm. Taking melatonin supplements one hour before bedtime helps improve sleep quality, shorten sleep onset, increase total sleep time, and reduce the time needed to wake up. During sleep, melatonin reduces the activity of energy hormones and supports lowering the body’s internal temperature toward morning. With the help of a melatonin supplement, we wake up more rested in the morning!
Melatonin is a natural regulator of sleep, but its biological effects go far beyond that. It is a powerful antioxidant that plays an important role in cancer prevention. Melatonin is also essential for brain, heart, and gastrointestinal health. Research has shown that melatonin supports the immune system through multiple pathways. A study published in 1999 in Antimicrobial Agents and Chemotherapy demonstrated that melatonin may help treat bacterial infections such as tuberculosis (Antimicrob Agents Chemother. 1999 Apr; Potentiation of Isoniazid Activity against Mycobacterium tuberculosis by Melatonin). Other studies recommend melatonin in fighting inflammation and autoimmune diseases, including type 1 diabetes (Int J Mol Sci. 2013 Apr; Melatonin: Buffering the Immune System).
When we don’t get enough sleep, our immune system can’t work at full capacity. Studies have shown that people who sleep less than 6 hours a night are more susceptible to respiratory infections and common colds compared to those who sleep more than 7 hours (Behaviorally Assessed Sleep and Susceptibility to the Common Cold, Aric A. Prather et al.; Sleep. 2015 Sep 1;38(9):1353-9). Melatonin supports the immune system by reducing tissue damage during inflammatory responses and regulating cytokine production. Want to keep your immunity strong and avoid catching colds? Take a melatonin supplement and aim for at least 7 hours of sleep each night!
Melatonin helps protect mitochondria — the cell’s energy powerhouses that produce most of the body’s ATP — according to a 2007 study (Frontiers in Bioscience, 2007 Jan 1; Melatonin role in mitochondrial function). This research shows that melatonin prevents mitochondrial damage, energy loss, and apoptosis caused by oxidative stress. Since melatonin is produced in response to darkness, poor sleep quality can negatively impact mitochondrial health. Low melatonin production promotes oxidative stress, accelerates aging processes, and increases the risk of degenerative diseases and chronic fatigue.
A study published in October 2020 in the Virus Research Journal discusses the potential mechanisms through which melatonin protects us during viral infections. The authors highlight several beneficial effects of melatonin against various respiratory viruses, viral hepatitis, viral myocarditis, and Ebola. In the case of respiratory infections, melatonin acts by:
