Melatonin 3 mg is a dietary supplement in capsule form containing melatonin. Melatonin is recommended to help reduce sleep disturbances and shorten the time needed to fall asleep. In addition to supporting quality sleep, melatonin supplements provide antioxidant and anti-inflammatory support, help maintain immune system function, and support brain, heart, and gastrointestinal health. They may also help improve quality of life in cases associated with fibromyalgia and help reduce symptoms of tinnitus (ringing in the ears).
Melatonin is a hormone produced by the pineal gland in the absence of light, representing the body’s chemical response to darkness. Also known as the “sleep hormone” or “hormone of darkness,” melatonin secretion is inhibited by light exposure. Natural melatonin production contributes to quality sleep, helps shorten sleep onset, and supports longer total sleep duration.
Our brain begins to release melatonin in the evening, around 9:00 PM. As melatonin secretion increases, the body recognizes that bedtime is approaching. Melatonin production depends on light exposure — in other words, if we expose ourselves to light in the evening, the body may not release melatonin properly. Watching TV or using a phone before bedtime can negatively affect sleep, as light emitted by electronic devices interferes with melatonin production. Ideally, screens should be avoided for at least one hour before going to bed to help stimulate natural melatonin release and maintain a healthy circadian rhythm.
When taken about one hour before bedtime, melatonin supplements may help improve sleep quality, shorten sleep onset, increase total sleep duration, and reduce the time needed to fully wake up. During sleep, melatonin helps regulate energetic hormones and supports a natural decrease in internal body temperature toward morning. With the support of a melatonin supplement, you may wake up feeling more rested and refreshed.
Studies suggest that melatonin has strong antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties and may help support immune system function. When we do not get enough sleep, the immune system cannot work at full capacity. Research has shown that people who sleep less than six hours per night may be more susceptible to respiratory infections and the common cold compared to those who sleep more than seven hours (Behaviorally Assessed Sleep and Susceptibility to the Common Cold, Aric A. Prather, Denise Janicki-Deverts, Martica H Hall, Sheldon Cohen; Sleep. 2015 Sep 1;38(9):1353-9). Melatonin may help support immune balance by contributing to the regulation of cytokine production and helping limit tissue damage during inflammatory responses. If you want to maintain a strong immune system, consider supporting healthy sleep habits and aim for at least seven hours of rest per night.
Melatonin supplements are often used to help improve sleep quality in women during menopause. Studies have shown notable improvements in mood and a reduction in symptoms of anxiety and depression following daily melatonin supplementation ((Effects of melatonin in perimenopausal and menopausal women: a randomized and placebo controlled study; G Bellipanni, P Bianchi, W Pierpaoli, D Bulian, E Ilyia; Exp Gerontol. 2001 Feb;36(2):297-310). Anxiety? Daytime fatigue? Drowsiness? Insomnia? Restlessness? Supporting healthy sleep with a melatonin supplement may be a helpful option.
Melatonin supplementation can be useful when you need to adjust your sleep–wake cycle during travel and adapt to different time zones. Studies have shown that melatonin may be effective in preventing and reducing discomfort associated with jet lag. The doses studied in such cases ranged between 0.5 mg and 5 mg of melatonin per administration Cochrane Database Syst Rev. 2002;(2):CD001520; Melatonin for the prevention and treatment of jet lag; A Herxheimer 1, K J Petrie).
Melatonin 3 mg is a dietary supplement.
