GABA, or gamma-aminobutyric acid, is found in the intestine and in the central nervous system and is a neurotransmitter synthesized in the brain from glutamic acid in the presence of vitamin B6. The synthesis of GABA requires several catalysts, especially vitamin B6 and magnesium, the latter having particular importance in maintaining the level of gamma-aminobutyric acid in the body. The role of this acid is to facilitate communication between brain cells, acting as a neurotransmitter that modulates neurotransmission and the interconnection of all other neurons. The principle on which neurotransmitters operate is to function as chemical messengers, meaning they block or inhibit certain signals in the brain while nervous system activity decreases. Studies conducted on people who consumed GABA as a dietary supplement have shown that it has the ability to improve relaxation by reducing anxiety, depression, stress, hyperkinetic disorders (Parkinson’s disease, Tourette syndrome, tardive dyskinesia), while also helping to induce sleep. In addition, GABA reduces the body’s reaction to the discontinuation of various addictive substances, being used to alleviate withdrawal symptoms, alongside Schisandra, 5-HTP, and Lion’s Mane mushroom.
Since only a few foods naturally contain GABA, the only way to fully benefit from the effects of this neurotransmitter is through dietary supplements.
One of the main functions of gamma-aminobutyric acid is to reduce nervous excitability, which can be linked to feelings of anxiety and fear. In fact, some anxiety disorders are associated with low levels of GABA. In such cases, GABA serves as a natural remedy to induce calmness and reduce agitation. A study published in the American Journal of Psychiatry showed that panic attacks are linked to impaired neuronal response to GABA (Am J Psychiatry, 2004 Dec; Impaired GABA neuronal response to acute benzodiazepine administration in panic disorder; https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/15569888/).
Approximately 30% of adults suffer from insomnia, according to statistics. GABA has a sedative and calming effect, helping to promote normal sleep induction. Studies have shown that taking a GABA supplement can also help reduce the time needed to fall asleep. For best results, GABA can be combined with magnesium, melatonin, vitamins B3 and B6, taurine, 5-HTP, valerian, Ashwagandha, or Cordyceps.
GABA 750 mg is a food supplement.
