Also known as ribose or the “sugar of life,” D-ribose is an organic compound — more precisely a carbohydrate (simple sugar) — naturally found in our body and in nature. It is a fundamental component of RNA and DNA acids, as well as an important factor in ATP (adenosine triphosphate) production. Our body produces D-ribose and then uses it to create ATP, the fuel used by the mitochondria within our cells. Among the main producers of D-ribose in the body are the liver, adrenal glands, and adipose tissue, while the heart, brain, and muscles produce smaller amounts.
ATP energy production is absolutely essential for health, as ATP represents the primary form of energy generated in the human body, and D-ribose helps provide the energy required by our cells. This is essential for maintaining cellular integrity and proper function. Although D-ribose is a simple sugar, it does not raise blood glucose levels. On the contrary, taking higher doses than recommended may lead to decreased blood sugar levels.
D-Ribose is recommended for adults and elderly individuals to support cardiac function, the normal functioning of the heart muscle and muscular system, as well as for athletes seeking improved endurance and increased energy levels. It is also suitable for people following vegetarian or vegan diets, where dietary intake of D-ribose may be limited.
Heart disease remains one of the most widespread conditions worldwide. A common aspect of cardiovascular diseases is myocardial ischemia, a condition that occurs when blood flow to the heart decreases and prevents it from receiving enough oxygen, negatively affecting cellular energy levels. Several human studies have shown that D-ribose may help restore depleted cellular energy levels following myocardial ischemia and may also support cardiac function. Approximately 25% of people over the age of 45 show early symptoms of cardiac dysfunction and are at risk of developing heart failure. Researchers highlight encouraging findings: D-ribose, a natural sugar molecule with a favorable safety profile, may help restore energy levels in tired or weakened hearts.
The body can synthesize ribose slowly but does not store it. Therefore, during stress, injury, or aging — when the heart and skeletal muscles cannot produce optimal ATP levels — supplementation may be beneficial. D-ribose is involved in ATP synthesis, the primary energy source required by every cell in the human body, including heart cells. D-ribose supplements may help normalize diastolic heart function by increasing energy reserves. Efficient ATP metabolism in the heart is essential, as the cardiac muscle is one of the body’s highest energy consumers.
As mentioned earlier, D-ribose is naturally present in our cells and is essential for energy production. A double-blind, crossover clinical study published in the Journal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition in 2017 evaluated the effects of 10 grams per day of D-ribose compared to the same dose of dextrose (glucose) in 26 healthy participants. During the administration period, subjects took part in 60-minute sessions of intense physical exercise on separate daily training sessions.
Researchers found that in the group receiving D-Ribose, both average and peak power increased significantly from day one to day three compared to the group receiving dextrose. Additionally, participants taking D-Ribose reported a significantly lower perceived exertion rate compared to those in the dextrose group.
D-ribose may help alleviate symptoms associated with fibromyalgia or chronic fatigue syndrome. According to studies, supplementation with 15 g of D-ribose per day for one month contributed to reduced pain intensity, increased energy levels, improved mental clarity, better sleep quality, and enhanced overall well-being in individuals experiencing fibromyalgia.
As we age, our cells naturally produce less adenosine triphosphate (ATP). The good news is that D-ribose — both produced naturally in the body and obtained from diet or supplements — supports ATP regeneration. Therefore, D-ribose may provide important benefits for skin health, particularly in anti-aging efforts.
D-Ribose is a food supplement.
Food supplements do not replace a varied diet and a healthy lifestyle! Do not exceed the recommended daily dose! Keep out of the reach and sight of young children!
