What are proteolytic enzymes?

Also known as proteases, proteolytic enzymes are responsible for breaking down proteins into smaller components such as peptides and amino acids. Among the most well-known proteolytic enzymes are bromelain, papain, trypsin, pepsin, and elastase. These enzymes are present in various tissues and bodily fluids, including the stomach, small intestine, pancreas, and bloodstream, where they play multiple roles such as protein digestion, absorption and recycling, regulation of physiological processes, and the removal of damaged cells and cellular waste.

Bromelain – the gift of pineapple for health

Pineapple, long valued in traditional Hawaiian medicine, is one of the richest natural sources of bromelain, the enzyme responsible for many of its beneficial properties. In addition to bromelain, pineapple is rich in vitamin C, vitamin B1, manganese, potassium, and phytonutrients.

Bromelain is a proteolytic enzyme with multiple health benefits, found in significant amounts in pineapple, particularly in the fruit’s core. One of its best-known properties is its strong anti-inflammatory action. Recent research also suggests fibrinolytic, anti-edematous, and antithrombotic effects, meaning it may help support the prevention of blood clot formation, swelling, and fluid retention.

How does bromelain help you?

Acts as a natural anti-inflammatory. As mentioned above, bromelain may help reduce the production of inflammatory compounds and inhibit the activity of enzymes involved in inflammatory processes. Therefore, it may support the management of conditions such as arthritis, tendonitis, or osteoarthritis.

Supports digestion. Bromelain helps break down proteins and facilitates food digestion. It may help reduce gastrointestinal discomfort and support the relief of symptoms associated with digestive issues, such as bloating or indigestion.

Supports the immune system. Studies suggest that bromelain may help stimulate the body’s immune response, contributing to defense against infections and illness. In addition, bromelain has antioxidant properties, helping protect cells against oxidative stress caused by free radicals. Supports faster wound healing. Thanks to its anti-inflammatory and proteolytic properties, bromelain may help accelerate wound and injury recovery by supporting cellular regeneration. Supports cardiovascular health. By helping reduce inflammation and oxidative stress — two important factors involved in cardiovascular conditions — bromelain may contribute to maintaining heart health. Research also suggests it may help support healthy cholesterol levels and reduce the risk of blood clot formation by helping prevent platelet aggregation, which may lower the risk associated with atherosclerosis and heart disease.

Papain – a natural remedy from papaya fruit

Papaya, a tropical fruit, is the primary source of papain, an enzyme known for its health-supporting properties. It is rich in nutrients, including vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants that help neutralize free radicals and protect cells against oxidative damage. Papain is a proteolytic enzyme extracted from unripe papaya and is widely recognized for its potential to support inflammation balance and tissue recovery. Research also suggests it may help improve digestion and support the body in managing infections and allergic responses.

How does papain help you?

Proteolytic activity. Papain has the ability to break down proteins into smaller fragments. It may be used in certain situations involving protein-based toxins, as it helps break down protein structures. Digestive support. As a proteolytic enzyme, papain supports protein digestion by helping break them down into amino acids, which is why it is commonly included in supplements designed to support digestive health.

Anti-inflammatory support. Papain may help reduce inflammation and associated discomfort in conditions such as arthritis or various injuries by helping inhibit the production of pro-inflammatory substances. Immunomodulatory action. Papain may support the proper functioning of the immune system, helping stimulate white blood cell production and contributing to a balanced immune response. Exfoliating properties. Papain is widely used in the cosmetic industry due to its ability to help remove dead skin cells and impurities from the skin’s surface. It may also help improve the appearance of stretch marks or pigmentation spots and is commonly included in exfoliating products and facial masks.

Bromelain & Papain is a food supplement.

Food supplements should not replace a varied and balanced diet and a healthy lifestyle. Do not exceed the recommended daily dose. Keep out of the reach and sight of young children.
