Rhodiola Salidrosides is a food supplement made from standardized Rhodiola extract, containing 3% salidrosides and 0.4% rosavins. Rhodiola has antioxidant and adaptogenic properties, supports vascular and brain health, helps stimulate the nervous system, aids in stress management, protects the heart and blood vessels, and supports cognitive and mental performance.
Rozavins versus Salidrosides
The properties of Rhodiola are attributed to its two key active components: rosavins and salidrosides, which act synergistically.
| Rozavins | Salidrosides |
| Anxiolytic effect, promotes good mood | Increases self-confidence |
| Reduces stress symptoms | Reduces symptoms of stress, anxiety, and depression |
| Adaptogenic action, reduces fatigue, enhances mental performance during exams | Adaptogenic action, reduces fatigue |
| Nootropic effect, improves working memory and mental capacity | Nootropic effect, enhances cognitive performance under stress, improves mental clarity |
| Improves physical performance, increases endurance, activates ATP synthesis and resynthesis in mitochondria, stimulates recovery processes after exercise | Tonic, stimulating effect |
| Regulates molecular and cellular events in adipogenesis | Promotes lipolysis and loss of differentiated cells via apoptosis |
| Pulmonary protector, reduces pulmonary fibrosis | Neuroprotective, reduces excessive inflammatory responses, inhibits neuroinflammation, reduces oxidative stress in the brain |
| Cardioprotective, protective effect in heart failure |
Recently, Rhodiola and other adaptogenic plants (Siberian ginseng, Schisandra, Ashwagandha) have been studied for their effects in preventing and managing viral infections and the associated inflammation, as well as during post-infection recovery. Thanks to its adaptogenic and anti-stress properties, Rhodiola helps maintain normal immune function and provides antioxidant protection for the body. During a viral infection, Rhodiola can support the protective immune response, exert antiviral activity, reduce inflammation (mitigating the so-called “cytokine storm”), and decrease vascular permeability. In the post-infection recovery phase, Rhodiola continues to support immune function by reducing oxidative stress.
Traditionally, Rhodiola has been used in Chinese medicine to reduce stress and fatigue caused by physical exertion. Recent research has explored its use as an adjunct in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), showing improved breathing and more efficient ventilation. Significant reductions in complications from acute respiratory distress syndrome were also observed with Rhodiola supplementation (Zhang et al., Early use of Chinese drug rhodiola compound for patients with post-trauma and inflammation in prevention of ALI/ARDS). Rhodiola’s antiviral properties have been studied in marathon runners, where supplementation promoted early antiviral activity and delayed exercise-induced viral replication (Ahmed et al., Rhodiola rosea exerts antiviral activity in athletes following a competitive marathon race, Front. Nutr., 2015, 2, 24). Additionally, multiple studies have shown that Rhodiola enhances resistance to cold, helps adapt to temperature changes, and improves acclimatization to high altitudes.
Neurologists at the University of California, Berkeley, have shown that chronic stress causes long-term changes in brain structure and function (New evidence that chronic stress predisposes brain to mental illness, UC Berkeley, Feb. 11, 2014). Chronic stress and elevated cortisol levels can affect the brain and neuronal connections, leading to mental and physical fatigue. It also lowers serotonin and norepinephrine levels, increasing the risk of anxiety, depression, and even memory loss. For those exposed to chronic stress, Rhodiola is an effective solution. It improves mental performance under stress, combats “brain fog,” and enhances focus, helping maintain academic or work performance. Rhodiola stimulates the nervous system to fight fatigue and restore mental clarity. Additionally, studies have shown that Schisandra provides important neuronal protection, reduces neuronal apoptosis, and can act as an adjunct in peripheral neuropathy.
