What is Chaga – Inonotus obliquus?
Chaga mushroom, also popularly known as “black gold” or the “forest diamond,” is a parasitic fungus that grows primarily on birch bark in cold climates such as Northern Europe, Siberia, Russia, Korea, Northern Canada, and Alaska. It concentrates many of the characteristic compounds of its host tree, being rich in betulinic acid, syringic acid, ursolic acid, and more. Externally, Chaga resembles a lump of burnt charcoal, with a black color due to the high melanin content it synthesizes. Internally, the mushroom is orange with a soft texture.
Chaga has been used for centuries in traditional medicine for its therapeutic properties and is now recognized as a valuable natural remedy. In the Baltic countries, it has been used for cleansing and disinfection, treating various stomach conditions, combating intestinal worms, supporting liver and heart health, as well as for asthma, bronchitis, lowering blood pressure, and even alleviating skin eczema.
Why is Chaga so valuable?
The benefits of Chaga mushroom are numerous and stem from its rich content of nutrients and bioactive compounds. Specifically, Chaga contains beta-glucans (polysaccharides), lignans, ergosterols, melanin, amino acids, triterpene saponins, superoxide dismutase, betulinic acid, potassium, sodium, zinc, copper, and manganese. Polysaccharides (beta-glucans) are the major active compounds in the aqueous extract of Chaga mushroom and provide a wide range of health benefits.
Studies show that Chaga supports heart health through anti-platelet aggregation, hypolipidemic, mild hypotensive, anti-gout, and antifibrotic actions. Additionally, due to its hypoglycemic effect, it can be used in metabolic syndrome. Research has also revealed that Chaga has anti-aging and adaptogenic properties by stimulating the production of dopamine and serotonin.
Chaga, a powerful natural antioxidant!
One of the most impressive aspects of Chaga mushroom is its extremely high content of antioxidant compounds. As you may already know, antioxidants help protect the body’s cells from the harmful effects of free radicals, such as the development of chronic diseases and premature aging. Chaga supports longevity through its remarkable antioxidant effect.
Chaga is considered one of the most potent natural antioxidant sources, being the mushroom with the highest value on the ORAC scale (the scale measuring total antioxidant capacity of foods), specifically 1,104 units per gram. It helps neutralize free radicals at the cellular level and aids in the repair of cellular DNA and RNA molecules.
How does Chaga protect immunity?
Inflammation is one of the natural defense mechanisms of the immune system, aimed at protecting the body from diseases. Persistent and untreated inflammation is associated with the development of numerous conditions, such as heart disease. Several laboratory studies indicate that Chaga extract can have a significant beneficial impact on the immune system by reducing long-term inflammation as well as targeting bacteria and viruses. Additionally, by stimulating the production of cytokines—specialized proteins involved in regulating immune system activity—Chaga enhances the activity of white blood cells, which are essential in fighting bacteria and viruses. Therefore, this mushroom may have beneficial effects in combating various infections, including the common cold and influenza. Other studies have shown that Chaga can prevent the production of harmful cytokines, which are responsible for triggering inflammation and are linked to numerous diseases. For example, in a mouse study, Chaga extract reduced inflammation and intestinal damage by inhibiting inflammatory cytokines.
