Scutellaria baicalensis has antiviral, anti-inflammatory, detoxifying, and relaxing action

Scutellaria baicalensis, or Baikal skullcap, is a perennial plant native to temperate regions of Asia. Its dried root has been widely used for its anti-inflammatory, anti-allergic, anti-infectious, antitumor, sedative, anti-stress, hypotensive, and vascular protective effects. It is recommended as an adjuvant in states of nervousness, stress, chronic fatigue, insomnia, premenstrual syndrome, dysmenorrhea, digestive disorders, respiratory conditions, and hepatitis. The root and rhizome of the plant contain flavonoids (baicalin, baicalein). These flavonoids stimulate liver function and have antibacterial, antipyretic, astringent, cholagogue, diuretic, expectorant, and tonic properties. Due to these characteristics, baicalin and baicalein are used in the cosmetic, food, and pharmaceutical industries. Chaga (Inonotus obliquus), also called “black gold,” is a parasitic fungus that primarily grows on the bark of birch trees in cold climates, such as Northern Europe, Siberia, Canada, and Alaska. Chaga contains polysaccharides, ergosterols (a precursor of vitamin D2), melanin, amino acids, triterpenoid saponins, superoxide dismutase, micro- and macroelements, and betulinic acid.
